The  oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is the most commonly used method to 
evaluate  insulin resistance (IR).  The objective of this study was to evaluate 
the  diagnostic utility of fasting tests compared with OGTT tests in women 
with  PCOS.  114 women with PCOS and 29 normal women were given a 2 hour  OGTT.  
Fasting insulin and glucose were measured at the time of the  test.  A 
significant correlation between the fasting and OGTT test results  was found.  
Normal fasting tests with abnormal OGTT results was only found  in 9 women.  IR was 
not found in any woman whose fasting insulin was less  than 9.9 Ul/ml .  All 
women with fasting insulin over 18.4 Ul/ml were found  to be IR.  The study 
concluded that fasting tests are useful in the  diagnostic of IR in PCOS 
patients.  OGTT is necessary when the fasting  insulin levels range between 9.9 and 
18.4 Ul/ml.
