The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is the most commonly used method to
evaluate insulin resistance (IR). The objective of this study was to evaluate
the diagnostic utility of fasting tests compared with OGTT tests in women
with PCOS. 114 women with PCOS and 29 normal women were given a 2 hour OGTT.
Fasting insulin and glucose were measured at the time of the test. A
significant correlation between the fasting and OGTT test results was found.
Normal fasting tests with abnormal OGTT results was only found in 9 women. IR was
not found in any woman whose fasting insulin was less than 9.9 Ul/ml . All
women with fasting insulin over 18.4 Ul/ml were found to be IR. The study
concluded that fasting tests are useful in the diagnostic of IR in PCOS
patients. OGTT is necessary when the fasting insulin levels range between 9.9 and
18.4 Ul/ml.
