This study was done to determine the prevalence of PCOS in overweight and
obese women. Only women who were seeking dietary treatment for overweight or
obesity were included in the study. Diagnosis of PCOS relied on the presence
of clinical and/or biochemical hyperandrogenism, oligo-ovulation, and
exclusion of secondary causes. Of the 113 women recruited in Spain, 32 (28.3%) had
PCOS. The results indicate that PCOS is markedly increased (28.3%) in women
who are overweight or obese compared to 5.5% prevalence in lean women with
PCOS. The study concluded that PCOS must be routinely ruled out in overweight
and obese premenopausal women seeking advice for weight loss.
