This study attempted to calculate the frequency of inuslin resistance in
women with PCOS. It was found that 58.06% of women with PCOS and with a BMI
greater than or equal to 25 (overweight or obese) were insulin resistant. The
sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were significantly lower in the insulin
resistant group and they had a higher free testosterone index. Progesterone
levels were lower in the insulin resistance group. The study concluded that
the fasting glucose to insulin ratio is a simple and useful test for
identifying insulin-resistant obese women with PCOS. By using that, the women with
PCOS who would benefit from therapy with insulin sensitizers can be identified.
