Carbamazepine (CBZ) is the generic form of Tegretol. Oxcarbazepine (OXC) is
the generic form of Trileptal. These drugs are not only used to treat
epilepsy, they are also used as mood stabilizers. The women taking CBZ or OXC had
lower serum testosterone levels and lower free androgen indexes than the
control subjects. CBZ medication was associated with increased concentrations
of serum sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). The patients taking OXC had
higher concentrations of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and
androstendione than did the women taking CBZ. The prevalence of polycystic ovaries was
high in those treated with OXC. These findings suggest that OXC may be
disadvantageous for women with epilepsy and hyperandrogenism, whereas CBZ may be
beneficial for these women.
